Research interests
Palaeoherpetology in the Neogene
Crocodile and turtle finds are common in Neogene sediments. Their systematic connections and palaeogeographic relations in Oligocene to Miocene localities in Eurasia and Africa are of large importance for the interpretation of former land connections and palaeotemperature estimates. The locality of Djebel Zelten (Libya; with a high-diversity of Crocodilians), as well as the Oligocene of Vietnam (with a remarkable frequency of turtle remains) is the primary focus of the research.
Biostratigraphy and Palaeogeography in the Toarcian of South Germany
The black shales of the Posidoniashale formation of Southern Germany were researched intensively over 150 years. Nevertheless, they still offer new finds, refined contour maps and biostratigraphic indications supply fertile soil for new questions: Did there exist a sea connections to the Tethys and if so, when and where; when and how did the formation of black shales end, and how the biostratigraphic conductance is to judge in particular in the bifrons zone? New interdisciplinary studies offer the basis for new models of sedimentation development, which are presented for discussion.
Mesozoic marine reptiles
Ichthyosaurs and marine crocodiles are common in Jurassic sediments of Europe. But some questions remain despite the outstanding fossil record: Where do the roots of the Ichthyosaurs lie? Which functional-morphologic meaning is to be attributed to the extreme „over bite” in Eurhinosaurus? Beyond that the abundance of available material offers the possibility of testing new methods in paleontology on the material in order to extrapolate new information about the appearance of the complete animal.
