Irregular Fighters: Is the Law of Armed Conflict Outdated?

Sibylle Scheipers has been <link https: www.st-andrews.ac.uk intrel people index.php ss203.html external-link-new-window external link in new>Senior Lecturer at the University of St Andrews since 2011. After she obtained a Postdoctoral Fellowship in International Relations and Security Studies at Chatham House, she became Director of studies for the “Changing Character of War” Programme at Oxford University. Her research focuses on ‘small wars’ and irregular warfare, irregular fighters and military auxiliaries as well as the law of war and prisoners in war. Most recently, she finished her research project “Clausewitz and Irregular Warfare: the state, the military and the people”, funded by the British Academy.

Her latest publications are Unlawful Combatants: A Genealogy of the Irregular Fighter (Oxford University Press, 2015) and Heroism and the Changing Character of War: Toward a Post-Heroic Warfare (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014).

Other important works include ‘Normative Power Europe: a credible utopia?’ (with Daniela Sicurelli) and Negotiating Sovereignty and Human Rights: International Society and the International Crime Court (Manchester University Press, 2010).
