- 2000 PhD in History. Dissertation "Der versperrte Wald. Vorindustrieller Waldressourcenmangel am Beispiel der bayerischen Rheinpfalz (1815-1870)“.

- 1994-1998 SFB projects "„Frühe Formen der Umweltpolitik“ " (Prof. Dr. Wolfram Siemann), "Staat im Dorf" (Prof. Dr. Lutz Raphael), University of Trier.

- 1998-2001 Research assistant at the chair of Prof. Dr. Lutz Raphael, University of Trier.

- 2001-2003 Practical teacher training (History, French, bilingual History, Ethics), Freiburg.

- 2003-2005 Teacher at the Real- und Sekundarschule Kaisten (CH) and at the Hindenburg-Gymnasium Trier.

- 2010/11 Stand-in professor of the Chair of History and its Didactics at the Freiburg University of Teacher Education.

- 2011 Appointment as W3 Professor.

- Jan-June 2013 Teaching and research stay at Stetson University, Deland (FL).

- Jan. 2013 Call for the W3 professorship „Neuere und Zeitgeschichte und Geschichtsdidaktik“ at the University of Erfurt, call rejected.

- Nov. 2014 Teaching award of the PH Freiburg for the seminar  "Konstantinopel - Byzanz - Instanbul. Wissenschaftliche Dokuramen zur Geschichte einer Stadt zwischen Orient und Okzident" (together with Matthias Baumann).

- Sept. 2016 Call to the W3-Professorship Didactics of History at the University of Tübingen since April 2017 Full Professor for Didactics of History at the University of Tübingen.
