Niven presents her findings in the context of a well-informed taphonomic and archaeological analysis of the site’s important Middle and Upper Paleolithic assemblages and draws informed conclusions about paleoenvironments and subsistence practices of late Neanderthals and early modern humans in Europe.

Distorting the Past: Gender and the Division of Labor in the European Upper Paleolithic

Linda R. Owen

Dr. Linda Owen re-assesses our image of prehistoric lifeways. Where are the pre-conceptions, where are the distortions when archaeologists describe 'women's work' against the image of the male hunter.

ISBN: 3-935751-02-8

240 pages with 37 illus. and 7 tables

The Author

This volume analyzes the possibilities of applying the concept of gender, the social construct of sex, to the Upper Paleolithic of Europe. Special emphasis is placed on the division of labor, specifically the procurement of food and raw materials and the manufacture and use of implements, as I believe that these topics can be investigated successfully within the limits of the archeological record. - Owen

The Series Editor

Linda R. Owen’s Distorting the Past breaks new ground and does what a book rarely does in helping us to correct our off-kilter assumptions. She leaves us with a Paleolithic world that is not populated exclusively by prominent, flint-knapping men who kill mammoths, horses and reindeer. At the same time she does not create a polemically dictated Paleolithic dream-world of across-the-board matriarchal dominance. Instead, while staying rigorously close to her sources, Owen shows that the past was inhabited by diverse kinds of people, who responded to specific settings and problems in manifold ways. In these contexts women were at times hunters, fishers, craftspeople, collectors, shamans, killers, educators, sisters, mothers and grandmothers. In this more balanced view of hunting and gathering societies, men and children are also central actors, and we begin to see Paleolithic life in which the myths that generations of scholars have helped to create are no longer the only illuminated points. - Nicholas J. Conard

Settlement Dynamics of the Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age

Edited by Nicholas J. Conard

In 1999 fifty leading scholars of early prehistory gathered in Tübingen for the second international conference on Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age Settlement Systems. They presented results from recent excavations and developed new hypotheses and theoretical models for the settlement dynamics of this period spanning the several hundred thousand years during which anatomically and culturally modern people evolved. This volume includes 27 of the papers delivered at the Tübingen conference and summarizes the state of our knowledge about the settlement dynamics of this period.

Settlement Dynamics of the Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age, Volume II

Edited by Nicholas J. Conard

This volume presents 22 papers on current research into the settlement dynamics of the Middle Paleolithic and Middle Stone Age. Many of these papers were presented at the third meeting of Commission 27 of the UISPP in Liège, Belgium in September, 2001. The research presented here draws on diverse sources of data about subsistence, technology, taphonomy, climatology, paleogeography, geoarchaeology and biological anthropology to build and test models for Middle Paleolithic and MSA settlement systems. This volume contains contributions by 37 international scholars that reflect multiple scales of analysis ranging from intra-site to regionally-oriented research. Diverse points of view highlight both unifying and contrasting elements in settlement dynamics during this period in which anatomically modern people emerged and important cultural advances were made across the Old World.
