Subject-Specific Part of the Programme

Our B.Ed. students are trained in the main disciplines of the subject English.

Literary and Cultural Studies, Linguistics and Academic English are the individual areas of study in the subject-specific part of the programme. Academic English focuses on advancing students’ language skills of spoken and written English. Graduates of our programme usually attain a C1, partly even a C2, level of proficiency in the English language according to the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR). Linguistics deals with language as a system (phonetics/ phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics), language as a means of communication (pragmatics, socio- and psycholinguistics, language acquisition) and the historical development of English. In Literary and Cultural Studies, students learn to explore and analyze literary and cultural texts (including modern media such as photography or film and digital media) from Great Britain, North America and the postcolonial Anglophone regions within their specific socio-historical contexts.

Teaching-Related Part of the Programme

Our B.Ed. students are prepared for the challenges of teaching English as a foreign language.

Our programme connects subject-specific knowledge with the demands of the classroom. The field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language as the teaching-related part of the programme presents and applies theories, models and concepts of teaching language, literature and media as well as empirical research in the field of education. The Bachelor curriculum in Teaching English as a Foreign Language encourages students to reflect upon the practical consequences of their theoretical knowledge in preparation for their obligatory school internship (Schulpraxissemester) in the Master of Education.

Structure of the Programme

                          

Obtaining Credits from the Master of Education ("Vorleistungen Masterstudium")

From the winter term 2020/21 onwards, Bachelor of Education students may obtain credits from the Master of Education in their final semesters of the B.Ed. to organize their studies – especially in the trasition period between the B.Ed. and the M.Ed. – in a more flexible way.


English as a Third Subject ("Erweiterungsfach") in the Bachelor/ Master of Education

In the Master of Education, students may also pursue studies in a third subject (Erweiterungsfach). English may only be studied as a major. The corresponding module handbook, which is designed as a special version of the handbook for the Master of Education English, offers an overview of all the modules for the third subject English (M.Ed. Erweiterungsfach Englisch Hauptfachumfang). Students in the Bachelor of Education from the third semester onwards may earn credits that will then count towards the Master of Education in their third subject (Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach).
