This talk explores how a nativist politics of exclusion has become normalised and legitimised through discursive shifts initiated by the far right political actors in and across the variety of European public spheres. It shows how exploring discursive shifts in/across public and political discourse, especially in the context of various real/imagined “crises”, helps tracing discursive-practical dynamics of the normalisation of politics and regimes of exclusion which frequently bring into the wider public imagination extreme, discriminatory and exclusionary visions of society and polity.
Michał Krzyżanowski is Professor of Media and Communications at Uppsala University, Sweden, and Director of Research at the Uppsala University Centre for Multidisciplinary Studies on Racism (CEMFOR). He is among the leading international scholars in critical discourse studies of the normalisation of the politics of exclusion in the context of illiberalism, far-right and neoliberalism. He is Editor-in-Chief of the international Journal of Language and Politics and is the author of numerous and widely cited books and articles.
