Open Panel Debate: Conflict Resolution in Cyprus: Where To?

Thursday 16 January 2020 – 10:00 c.t. – Seminar Room 5, Theologicum

Cyprus has become an intractable conflict that has once again reached an impasse after the hope sparked by the Annan Plan in 2004. What are the chances of conflict resolution in Cyprus? What is the role of civil society? How can the influence of external actors be reduced or turned into a positive one? In what ways may UNSC 1325 contribute to conflict transformation? We want to discuss these and other questions with Umut Bozkurt, Assistant Professor at Eastern Mediterranean University and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics, and Maria Hadjipavlou, Associate Professor at the University of Cyprus and Senior Research Fellow at Columbia University’s Center for International Conflict Resolution. Both speakers are members of the Gender Advisory Team promoting UNSC 1325 in the context of the Cyprus conflict, and of the Technical Committee on Gender Equality in the negotiations for a future Cyprus peace agreement.
