General information for the preparation of a scientific thesis in economic theory

This guide for the preparation of a thesis does not claim to be complete. Its main purpose is to summarize the most important principles and to point out some important facts.

structure	title page
	table of contents	The numbering and the headings in the text have to match the ones used in the table of contents.
	list of figures	The list of figures has to contain all figures with the respective numbers and headings.
	list of tables	The list of tables has to contain all tables with the respective numbers and headings.
	symbol directory (for formal theoretical works)	The symbol directory has to contain all symbols and variables used within the work, with their respective definitions.
	text	The introduction leads the reader to the actual topic and narrows it down. The main part deals with the assigned topic. A summary and a critical assessment conclude the work.
	numbering	Upon the first text page the arabic paging starts. Pages with lists, excluding the bibliography, have to be in roman numbering.
		The amount of footnotes has to be held low.
		Abbreviations (e.g. EQ for equilibrium) should be avoided.
		(Important) Equations have to be numbered consecutively.
		Within the text, the argumentation should not be based on the variables but on the underlying economic terms.
		Apart from the content, the orthography, the grammar and the style of the work are part of the evaluation.

bibliography	The alphabetically sorted bibliography contains all publications mentioned within the text and and only these.

Diese Anleitung für das Erstellen von Abschlussarbeiten erhebt nicht den Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit. Sie bezweckt vor allem, die wichtigsten Grundsätze zusammenzufassen und auf einige wichtige Dinge hinzuweisen.

Aufbau	Deckblatt
	Inhaltsverzeichnis	Die Numerierung und die Überschriften in Text und Inhaltsverzeichnis müssen übereinstimmen.
	Abbildungsverzeichnis	Das Abbildungsverzeichnis führt alle Abbildungen mit ihren Nummern und Überschriften an.
	Tabellenverzeichnis	Das Tabellenverzeichnis führt alle Tabellen mit ihren Nummern und Überschriften an.
	Symbolverzeichnis (bei formal theoretischen Arbeiten)	Das Symbolverzeichnis enthält alle in der Arbeit verwendeten Symbole und Variablen mit ihren Definitionen.
	Text	Die Einleitung führt den Leser zum eigentlichen Thema hin und grenzt es ab. Im Hauptteil wird das gestellte Thema bearbeitet. Eine Zusammenfassung und kritische Würdigung schließt die Arbeit ab.
		Auf der ersten Textseite beginnt die arabische Seitennumerierung. Verzeichnisse, mit Ausnahme des Literaturverzeichnisses, werden römisch numeriert.
		Die Anzahl der Fußnoten ist gering zu halten.
		Abkürzungen (z.B. GG für Gleichgewicht) sollten vermieden werden.
		(Wichtige) Gleichungen werden fortlaufend durchnumeriert.
		Innerhalb des Textes sollte nie mit Hilfe der Variablen, sondern immer auf der Basis der zugrundeliegenden ökonomischen Begriffe argumentiert werden.
		Neben dem Inhalt gehen auch Orthographie, Grammatik und Stil der Arbeit in die Bewertung ein.

Literaturverzeichnis	Das alphabetisch geordnete Literaturverzeichnis listet alle im Text erwähnten Veröffentlichungen und nur diese auf.
