Sustainability award for theses 2025

On September 15, 2025, the University of Tübingen will once again be awarding the annual sustainability prize for theses. Up to three Bachelor's and Master's theses and one dissertation will be awarded.

The challenge of sustainable development is to develop solutions for a globally just and sustainable development of our society - from an ecological, economic and socio-cultural perspective.

The Sustainability Prize for final theses is awarded annually to up to three Bachelor's and Master's theses (or equivalent academic achievements such as diploma theses, admission theses, etc.) and one dissertation. The competition is expressly aimed at students from all faculties. The prizes are endowed with €300 for Bachelor's theses, €500 for Master's theses and €1,000 for dissertations and are awarded each year at a ceremony. The award winners are expected to attend this event in fall 2025 and briefly present their work.

The Sustainability Award for final theses creates incentives for the scientific examination of sustainable development topics and makes existing good teaching and research at the University of Tübingen and its relevance for society visible.

APPLICATION CRITERIA
This year, all students and alumni of the University of Tübingen who have written and completed their thesis with a grade of at least good (2.0) in the previous two academic years (01.10.2023-30.09.2025) can apply for the Sustainability Award until September 15, 2025.

The decisive factor for the selection of the award winners is the extent to which their thesis makes a theoretically or practically relevant and excellent research contribution to sustainable development. Even though the focus is on students applying themselves, all thesis supervisors are encouraged to encourage their graduates to apply.

The application includes a cover letter, a copy of the (provisional) degree certificate, the thesis, a short letter of recommendation from the thesis supervisor and a two- to three-page explanatory overview. This overview should briefly summarize the approach and key findings of the thesis, address the thesis' understanding of sustainability and, in particular, explain the extent to which the thesis makes a relevant research contribution in terms of sustainable development. The letter of recommendation should make the professional assessment of the work visible to the jury and provide an assessment of the relevance of the work for sustainable development.

The complete application documents (cover letter, letter of recommendation, explanatory overview, thesis and degree certificate) must be sent electronically by 15.09.2025 to the following address
nachhaltigkeitspreisspam prevention@uni-tuebingen.de

The applications will be evaluated by a jury made up of members of the Advisory Board for Sustainable Development and, if applicable, other subject representatives.
