Englisches Seminar

The M.A. in English Literatures and Cultures is a two-year program, starting in the summer or winter semester.

First Year

Students focus on the core curriculum. The four 12 ECTS modules consist of two graduate seminars in combination with work groups and term papers and another two consisting of combinations of graduate seminars with lecture courses and oral exams. All courses aim at providing an advanced understanding of key concepts and theories in literary and cultural studies plus in-depth analysis of important developments in the Anglophone world. The Interdisciplinary Profile (12 ECTS) gives students the opportunity to take courses outside of the core curriculum and develop an individual profile.

Second Year

The two Research Modules (Academic Writing 6 ECTS, Methodology 12 ECTS,) prepare students for their M.A. thesis. In a graduate academic writing class, students will develop advanced strategies for independent research and writing. In the Methodology Module, students will try out these strategies in a supervised Independent Studies Project and attend a Research Colloquium for discussions with faculty, PhD students and other M.A. candidates as well as presenting their own research for the M.A. thesis. In the Professional Experience Module (12 ECTS), students can do an internship or work as a tutor in order to gain practical work experience. The final module (30 ECTS) consists of the M.A. thesis and an oral exam.

Digital Humanities Track ("Profillinie")

For students in the MA English Literatures and Cultures programme, it is possible to pursue the Digital Humanities (DH) Track of the Faculty. The Digital Humanities link established approaches from the humanities/philologies with methods and tools of data processing. In the digital humanities track, basic knowledge of data processing and programming is combined with a tool- and practice-oriented approach that offers a job-oriented and practical instruction. No prior knowledge in programming etc. is required. For the track programme, 30 ECTS from the regular MA curriculum are being replaced by modules in the field of DH; this goes for the modules “Interdisciplinary Profile” (12 ECTS), “Research II: Academic Writing” (6 ECTS) and “Professional Experience” (12 ECTS). The DH track consists of modules relating to basics of the DH, tools and applications, as well as a practical task.
