Martin Bartelheim (Prehistoric Archaeology), co-led excavations at the late Bronze Age hilltop settlement of Kaleburnu-Kral Tepesi/ Galinoporni-Vasili on Cyprus, in cooperation with the Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta, Cyprus, and the University of Çanakkale, Turkey. The finds on the surface and the clearly visible architectural structures in the immediate vicinity made it clear that the entire site had a high degree of social structure and played a central role in the region. Since the entire Karpaz Peninsula had rarely been researched archaeologically previously, new insights into the prehistory in this region of Cyprus pointed to Kral Tepesi’s importance on ancient shipping routes for the trading centers of the Levant and Southeast Anatolia. Geomorphological findings likewise revealed harbor sites in the immediate vicinity. Information on the supra-regional connections provide comparative material analyses that can be contextualized alongside the results of other network members to evaluate past exchange networks and their economic activities.
