Seminar für Sprachwissenschaft

General Information

Change of subjects

I have a minor in linguistics and would like to change to a major subject (or vice versa). Is this possible?
In principle, this is possible. Further information can be obtained from the responsible specialist consultants.

What do I have to consider when changing major or minor subjects?
According to the state university law, students who wish to change their subjects from the third or higher semester onwards must prove that they have completed a course of study counselling. Please contact your B.A. study advisor.
If German is not your native language and you want to change from an international course of study, such as computer linguistics, to the course of study General Linguistics, you need proof of your knowledge of German at C1 level. The Student Secretariat can help you determine which tests are recognised by the university.

Are credits earned in accordance with previous study regulations recognised when changing subjects?
If the modules are identical or equivalent, recognition is possible.

Key Qualifications (interdisciplinary occupational field-oriented competencies)

How can I achieve the key qualification performance?
Key qualifications are achievements that are included in the B.A. degree course in addition to the main and minor subjects. The credits include internships, foreign languages that are not compulsory within the framework of the B.A. degree programme, and courses offered by the Career Service of the University of Tübingen, the ZDV or the interdisciplinary course Studium Professionale.

How are key qualifications credited?
You will receive a certificate for the recognition of key qualifications. The ECTS credits are recorded by the Examination Office. The number of ECTS points for an internship depends on the duration and scope of the competences acquired.

Language proficiency

Do I have to prove certain language skills?
Until the orientation exam, English must be demonstrated at B2 level and another language at B1 level. The knowledge of a language at Abitur level, proven by the Abitur certificate, is considered to have been achieved at B2 level

Examinations

What is the difference between an examination and a study achievement?
In general, examination achievements are graded and academic achievements are not graded. An examination achievement counts as or to the module grade. The respective examination services for the individual modules are regulated in the module manual. If a module grade is not at least "sufficient" (4.0), the module is considered not passed. A study achievement is assessed as "erbracht/nicht erbracht". However, a course of study is only completed if the teacher attests sufficient quality of the course of study.

Parallel studies / double studies

I am studying "General Linguistics" and would like to study an additional subject in parallel.
Due to an amendment to the State University Act, applications for parallel studies are only approved in justified exceptional cases. (LHG, The newly worded § 60 para. 1 sentence 3 LHG (Landeshochschulgesetzt) stipulates that "... enrollment in two or more degree programmes with limited admission is only permissible if this is necessary for special professional, scientific or artistic reasons.")

BAföG

Where can I get a certificate according to. 48 BAföG?
Responsible for the certificate according to § 48 BAföG is Christian Bentz chrisspam prevention@christianbentz.de

Structure of Studies

Structure of Programme

How is the course structured?
The B.A. major subject "General Linguistics" is divided into 3 years of study, which are completed with the orientation examination in the first year, the intermediate examination in the second year and the Bachelor examination in the third year. In the main subject students acquire 99, in the minor 60 and 21 credit points in interdisciplinary occupational field-oriented competences.

What are the study regulations?
The study regulations define the framework conditions for proper study. It lists the modules, performance requirements and examination regulations to be completed. With the help of the study regulations, you can plan your studies and create study plans for each semester.

What does it mean to me if several study regulations exist for my degree programme?
It is quite possible that revisions and new versions of study regulations may occur at irregular intervals. In principle, you are studying according to the regulations in force when you started your studies.

What are modules?
A general characteristic of the Bachelor's programme is its modular structure. These are various thematically separate areas in which specific events have to be attended. The course of studies "General Linguistics" contains modules which are divided into three areas: Basic and method modules, basic modules and in-depth modules. These modules will be completed during the 3 years of study.

What is the module manual?
In addition to the study regulations, the module handbook contains descriptions of the individual modules of the course of study, for which lectures, seminars and other events then take place. This means that no specific individual events are documented here, but the content aspects of the individual modules are described. Just like the study regulations, you should familiarize yourself with the module manual at an early stage. The current module manual (main subject) can be found here, the version of 2016 can be found here.

Credit Points and Certificates

What are credits? Which areas of study do they cover?
The so-called ECTS credits are a quantitative measure of the student's performance and are also intended to ensure the compatibility of European higher education qualifications. They are awarded for direct teaching as well as for the time spent preparing and following up the teaching material, the examination effort and preparation for the examination, including final theses, student research projects and internships. 1 point corresponds to about 30 working hours.

What types of certificates of achievement are there?
Depending on the business event type, there are different activity statements. Lectures are usually written to test knowledge and understanding. In seminars, on the other hand, the services to be provided are more variable, but often consist of a presentation and a paper, homework or project work.

How long can I study?
The orientation examination must be passed by the third semester at the latest, the intermediate examination by the fifth semester at the latest. The standard period of study for the Bachelor's programme is six semesters, but this can be exceeded. It is in your own interest to complete your studies as quickly as possible.
