Cave art surveys in southern Burgundy

Numerous Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites are known in southern Burgundy and show that the region was definitely relevant for Palaeolithic people. At the same time, the local karst contains many caves. So the discovery of Palaeolithic cave art in Agneux caves lead to the question if more caves with previously unrecognized art could exist in the area. Is the relative "emptiness" of the region in terms of rock art due to geology, preservation conditions or the intensity of research, or is it due to cultural factors?

As part of Annika Rebentisch's doctoral thesis in the SFB 1070 ResourceCultures and supervised by Harald Floss, systematic prospections are carried out since 2022 to answer these questions and to examine the caves of southern Burgundy for the presence of rock art.
