Umbeli Belli

Umbeli Belli is a rock shelter site in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It spans a 2 m deep archaeological sequence covering both, the Later (LSA) and Middle Stone Age (MSA). It is well known for its occupational horizons dating to the end of the MSA, the so called final MSA providing a large number of unifacial and bifacial points and a strong emphasize on shaping technology. Umbeli Belli was originally found and excavated by Charles Cable who had a research scope on the terminal LSA. Since 2016 new excavations are conducted under the leadership of Dr. Gregor Bader and Prof. Nicholas Conard in order to document the rich LSA and MSA assemblages and to investigate chrono-cultural variation in KwaZulu-Natal. The research is basically funded by the “Roceeh” project of the Heidelberger Academy of science.
