New way forward to the Athena X-ray Observatory

On the 8th of November, the Science Programme Committee of the European Space Agency (ESA) endorsed a rescoped version of the Athena X-ray observatory. The NewAthena is a flagship mission of the ESA Science Program and will transform our knowledge in almost every corner of modern astrophysics. The effort to rescope the mission led to a new mission concept that is technically and financially affordable, while enabling transformational science.

The High Energy Astrophysics department of the IAAT is significantly involved in the mission and actively cooperates with the MPE in Garching on one of the two instruments onboard NewAthena, the Wide Field Instrument that will map the X-ray Universe as never done before.
