Welcome to the Berkefeld Research Group

The primary objective of my group's research program is the design of molecular structures that interconvert electric and chemical bond energy in an efficient manner. We pursue this objective by following a mechanistic approach: Starting from molecular PLATFORMs (our toolbox) we create molecular STRUCTUREs and study their FUNCTION at the molecular level.

At present, our portfolio includes bimetallic nickel-sulphur structures that perform HYDROGEN OXIDATION as well as FORMATION, just depending on the respective charge state. Radical-sulphur structures of the group-10 metals form a complementary system and feature intriguing electronic properties such as redox-responsive absorptivity of (near-)infrared light.

Why sulphur?

Sulphur is a multitalented element! Sulphur provides a wealth of functional properties that includes:

  1. Covalent bonds to late transition-metals: Electron transfer along M-S units
  2. Bronsted-basicity: Proton transfer between sulphur and metal
  3. Sulphur-radicals: H-Atom-transfer reactivity and (near-)infrared light absorbtion
