Mathematics is a key technology. Computers, secure data transfer, weather forecast, digital image processing, risk management and much more are inconceivable without mathematics. The graduates of our scientific degree programmes are in demand and have excellent career prospects. Typical professional fields are banks, insurance companies and management consultancies, but mathematicians also work for Lufthansa, Deutsche Bahn, the large automobile manufacturers and actually all well-known large companies. Likewise, the prospects of being accepted into school service are still excellent for graduates of our Master of Education courses.Interesting case studies can be found in the form of specific professional portraits on the website of the German Mathematical Society.

The trial studies of the University of Tübingen offer prospective students the opportunity to get first insights in the course of studying at a university.

The university offers an online self-assessment (in German only) for prospective students which gives information on the study in general and on the study programmes in particular. The self-assessment gives feed back on how appropriate the own expectations on the study and the study programmes are. The department of mathematics together with the Hector research institute of education sciences and psychology has developed such a self-assessment for the Bachelor of Science Mathematik as well as for the Bachelor of Education, which we recommend our prospective students. Among others the following questions are addressed:

• What are the requirements for studying mathematics?
• Which competences will I acquire by studying mathematics?
• What are my job prospects?

Besides, the self-assessment addresses typical misconceptions about studying mathematics.

On the platform BW² - sample exercises from studies, there are numerous exercises relating to courses in which one can acquire a first university degree, including the Bachelor courses of the Mathematics Department at the University of Tübingen. There is an entry page with basic information for every degree programme. Then you get to the sample exercises. The contents are selected in such a way that they provide an insight into the main subject areas and methods of the respective degree programme. There is feedback or further explanations to solve the individual exercises.

The department of mathematics offers three bachelor study programmes:

The department of mathematics offers the following Master study programmes:

• Master of Science Mathematik
• Master of Science Mathematical Physics
• Master of Education Lehramt Gymnasium
• Master of Education Lehramt Gymnasium Erweiterungsfach
• Master of Education im Höheren Lehramt an beruflichen Schulen

The department offers several additional courses before the start of the studies and during the first semesters which should facilitate the transition from school to university. This is supplemented by structures for individual study guidance.

• Pre-course mathematics: For the study start in the winter term the mathematics department offers beginners of the bachelor programmes a preparation for studying which should facilitate the transition from school to university.
• Online Mathematics Bridging Course OMB+:
  First-year students in degree programmes at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences can test their knowledge of school mathematics via a sophisticated online bridge course and close any gaps. Questions are answered daily from 10am-8pm by trained tutors in an online chat. The course is available in German, English, French and Chinese.
• Math Hour:
  This is an event taking place twice a week offering students the possibility to work together with fellow students on their questions concerning the lectures and the exercises. The event is hosted by lecturers and students from higher semesters who are available for questions and support for the working students, especially those of the first semesters.
• Revision courses for analysis and linear algebra: The revision courses are accompanying courses for the lectures and exercise classes of the main beginner courses in all mathematical study programmes in analysis and linear algebra. This offers the students an institutionalised framework to ask questions about the lectures and the exercises and receive qualified answers. Especially interesting examples are discussed which is often very helpful for understanding.
• Counselling Office of the Department of Mathematics:
  The counselling office is an institution of the department for study advice before and during the study. During the open consultation-hours as well as via e-mail students from higher semesters are available as advisers. They are capable of first advise concerning study programmes and the Erasmus programmes.
• Study advisers:
  Beside the counselling office the study advisers of the department are available for the students with advice concerning study, the different study programmes, studying abroad and many more at any time. For the Bachelor and Master of Science study programmes this is the dean of academic affairs of the department, for the study programme Master of Science Mathematical Physics also Prof. Dr. Stefan Teufel is available for questions, for the teaching education the forwarding to the study programme adviser is done by the counselling office.
