Dr. Sara D. Beck

Ph.D. English Linguistics, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany, 2020
M.A. English Linguistics, Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany, 2013
B.A. Linguistics and German, Lawrence University, Appleton, WI, USA, 2010

Sara Beck (maiden: Wallsworth) did her undergraduate studies in Linguistics and German at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, USA. Upon graduation in 2010, she received a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship grant and moved to Germany to teach English at the Erich-Kästner Gymnasium in Eislingen. She received her M.A. in English Linguistics at the University of Tübingen in 2013, with a focus on second language acquisition and teaching. In 2014, she began her doctoral research with the SFB 833 at the University of Tübingen under the supervision of Andrea Weber and Claudia Friedrich. In 2020 she completed her PhD Project in psycholinguistics: "Native and Non-native Idiom Processing: Same Difference". She is currently continuing research in non-native and native language processing using psycholinguistic methods.

Research Interests

Using online ratings, reaction time experiments, eye-tracking, and fMRI, her current research addresses:

  • Native and nonnative idiomatic processing
  • Storage of idioms and formulaic language
  • Online access to literal and figurative meaning
  • Activation of literal and figurative language in the brain
  • Effects of global and local context on nonnative processing
  • Nonnative memory for and learning of idioms
