Jürgen Rüland is <link https: portal.uni-freiburg.de politik professuren internationale-politik professor external-link-new-window external link in new>Professor of International Politics and former Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University Freiburg. He also served as director of the Arnold Bergstraesser Institut in Freiburg.

During his career he has conducted research at numerous universities in Southeast Asia and focused on topics of cooperation and institutions in International Relations, globalisation and regionalisation, international politics in the Asia-Pacific region, democratisation as well as political, socio-economic and cultural dynamics in Southeast Asia.

His numerous publications include Parliaments and Political Change in Asia: A Comparative Study of India, Indonesia, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand (Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, 2005), GiveJesus a Hand! Charismatic Christians: Populist Religion in the Philippines (Ateneo de Manila UniversityPress, 2008) and most recently ASEAN as an Actor in International Fora: Reality, Potential and Constraints(Cambridge University Press, 2015).
