Micropaleontology

Welcome to the micropaleontology group. Our group, currently consisting of 5 doctoral students, an associated lecturer and a technician, as well as various student assistants as well as BSc and MSc students, deals with all questions relating to the reconstruction of the paleoenvironment and the paleoclimate of the last 1 million years with the help of lake sediments, which are often located close to key archaeological sites. The processing of the lake sediments includes the analysis of diatoms (silicate algae), fluid imaging techniques, Sr-O-C isotope analysis of aquatic microfossils such as fish bones, ostracods, mollusks and gastropods, the sedimentology of the deposits themselves and their geochemistry (XRF, XRD, TOC) as well as modern analog techniques. Geographically, our research regions are mainly located in Africa, Greece and Germany (see map).
