Olaf Kramer is Professor of Rhetoric and Knowledge Communication at the Department of General Rhetoric, Head of the Presentation Skills Research Center and one of the editors of Science Notes magazine and the book series neue rhetorik / new rhetoric published by DeGruyter. Since 2021, Kramer has been spokesperson for the RHET AI Center for Science Communication on Artificial Intelligence. Since 2022, he has also been Managing Director of the Research Center for Science Communication (RCS). His main fields of research include science communication, communicative competence, political communication, digital rhetoric and virtuality. Kramer is the first chairman of the "Rhetorikforum. Association for the Promotion of Rhetoric in Science and Practice".
Professional stages
Kramer studied general rhetoric, modern German literature, philosophy, and psychology in Tübingen, Frankfurt am Main (under Jürgen Habermas), and Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA (under Lawrence Grossberg). Between 1999 and 2008, he worked as a research assistant at the Seminar for General Rhetoric. After completing his doctorate with a thesis on rhetoric in Goethe (2008), he worked as a temporary postdoctoral researcher in the department headed by Professor Joachim Knape.
Since 2012, Kramer has headed the Presentation Skills Research Center, a third-party funded project he acquired himself with seven research assistants. At the same time, he has been a member of the management team of Jugend präsentiert (Youth Presents) since 2013 and founder of the Science Notes series. In 2014, Kramer launched the lecture series “Rhetoric and Knowledge” before completing his habilitation in 2015 with a thesis on virtual reality – and receiving his teaching license in the two subjects of general rhetoric and modern German literature.
In 2016, Kramer was appointed to the Klaus Tschira Professorship for Rhetoric and Knowledge Communication. Since 2016, he has also been a faculty member of the LEAD Graduate School, which is funded by the Excellence Initiative.
Parallel to his academic career, Kramer has also been repeatedly active in media practice, including participation in numerous television programs for ZDF/3sat and RTL. In addition, he has worked as a rhetoric consultant and has led rhetoric training events for numerous associations and companies (including the German Foreign Office, the German Economy Foundation, the Böhringer Ingelheim Fund, Max Planck Society, Körber AG) as well as active participation in the faculty council, the study commission, and the departmental advisory board. He has also served as a jury member for the Tübingen City Writer and has designed and moderated the Science Notes series.
