Departmental Seminar: Thinking Globally about (the Study of) Security

Pınar Bilgin (Bilkent University), Wednesday, 6 december 2023, 16 h c.t., Room 124, IfP or via Zoom

Putting ‘global’ in front of security does not render its study global. We need to ask ourselves what thinking globally about security (studies) entails. Thinking globally involves curiosity about what others think about the world and making sustained effort to locate their thoughts (on paper or elsewhere). While we are beginning to understand the Eurocentric limitations of IR, oftentimes we treat it as an ‘absence’. In this talk, Pınar Bilgin will draw on the notion of ‘constitutive outside’ to
show how those who have been outside of narratives on security (studies) have been constitutive of security in theory and practice.
Pınar Bilgin is professor of International Relations at Bilkent University, President of the World  International Studies Committee and currently Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Global Cooperation Research KHK/University of Duisburg. She is the author and editor of many core
contributions to critical security studies, including Regional Security in the Middle East: A Critical Perspective (2nd ed. 2019) and The International in Security, Security in the International (2016). Her talk will be based on a forthcoming book with Karen Smith on Thinking Globally about World Politics.
