Symposium „Ethics as a profession"

For more than 25 years, scientists from various disciplines have been working together at the Ethics Center of Tübingen on socially relevant ethical issues, most of which concern the interfaces between universities, the public and politics. In contrast to the late 1980s, ethical issues have become a permanent feature of public discourse and numerous institutions in science and society. But what does it mean to understand applied ethics as a professional profile, what role can and should academically trained ethicists play both within and outside the university landscape?

We would like to use our background of professional experience, which is not only longstanding but also broad-based, to explore and discuss challenges, opportunities and limits of "ethics as a profession" together with former and current colleagues.

After a brief look at the Ethics Center of Tübingen and some remarks on framing the topic, Prof. Dr. Andreas Lob-Hüdepohl (Catholic University of Applied Sciences Berlin) will then ask the systematic question in the evening lecture to what extent a professional ethics of ethics is required. The second day offers the opportunity to continue intensive discussions with each other. In parallel "table discussions" on three more specific topics, small groups can exchange experiences, make problem constellations clear and consider possible solutions:

1. (Inter)Disciplinary Identities and Careers (Moderation: Thomas Potthast)
2. European Perspectives ( Moderation: Members of the International Board of the Ethics Center)
3. Paths outside the academic sphere (Moderation: Johannes Reidel, Robert Bosch Foundation)
