Integrated technology development: including ethical, legal, social and economic aspects

Tuesday 5 February 2019, 05-08 pm at the Haus der Wirtschaft, Reutlingen

Sometimes a technology development leads to unforeseen problems, which can only be solved afterwards with a lot of effort. Do you remember the "nude scanner" for security checks at airports? Only after the scanners were already in use did it become clear that serious ethical and social aspects were not recognized. The manufacturers had to withdraw their devices and costly retrofit them.

However, there are ways to prevent such unfortunate surprises, which may come to you after market entry. Experts from the fields of ethics, law, social sciences and economics will use practical examples and concrete working materials to show you how to identify ethical, legal, social and economic aspects at an early stage and integrate them into your development processes.

In the first part of the evening event, the concept of integrated technology development will be presented, a new funding and research format that enables the process-accompanying inclusion of ethical, legal, social and economic aspects. The benefits of integrated technology development and the costs to be expected will be discussed jointly.

The second part of the evening is about practical implementation. First, six building blocks will be presented which are important for the success of the integration altogether. Afterwards, there will be the opportunity to get background information in a personal conversation with the speakers and to familiarize oneself with concrete working materials on questions such as the following and, if you are interested, to try them out:

  • What are the ethical, legal, social and economic aspects of technology development?
  • What competencies do representatives of ethics, law, social sciences and economics actually bring to a technology development project?
  • What possibilities are there for integrating their expertise into a technology development project?

The speakers refer to the Interdisciplinary Technology Development Handbook (Springer VS), which they are currently preparing.
