Technology Socialisation? Social Appropriateness and Artificial Systems

Is it possible and necessary to socialize technology? And what would that mean?

Technology will continue to be an increasingly important medium for human communication and interaction, but more and more human interaction will take place not only through technology but also with it. One dimension of new human-technology relations is the phenomenon of social appropriateness. Although social skills cannot be reduced to simple set of rules, people are generally able to 'read the room' and 'strike the right note' quite reliably. But what about 'intelligent' technical systems? Can they - should they - be equipped with the ability to behave socially appropriate in order to blur another important boundary between humans and technology? In other words, is it possible and necessary to socialize technology?
