The IZEW congratulates Professor Vera Hemleben on her birthday!

Professor Vera Hemleben celebrates her 80th birthday on 20 May. We congratulate the founding member of our Ethics Centre and say thank you for the many years of support, accompaniment and discussion!

Prof. Dr. Vera Hemleben belonged from the beginning to the discussion group "Ethics in the Natural Sciences", which was founded in 1985 and from which the "Centre for Ethics in the Sciences" emerged in 1990. As a geneticist who dealt with all aspects of molecular biological investigations on plants, she was also a pioneer in the promotion and supervision of interdisciplinary doctoral theses on ethical questions at the then Faculty of Biology in cooperation with the Ethics Centre. Vera Hemleben was first chairwoman of the Scientific Council of the IZEW, which was formed in 1994; there and in the two DFG Research Training Groups "Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities" (1990-1998) and "Bioethics" (20014-2013), she supported, advised, prudently accompanied and strengthened the Centre through her critical eye. We are very pleased that Prof. Hemleben is still supporting us, for example as chairperson of the IZEW's funding association, and hope that she will remain with us for a long time to come.
We say thank you very much and wish Vera Hemleben all the best for her birthday.
