Postdoctoral Research Fellow for AI in Education: Multimodal Learning Analytics in Collaborative Learning (100%, E 13 TVL, for 2 years) (HIB)

Deadline: 15 July 2026

The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology at the University of Tübingen is currently inviting applications for the following position:

Postdoctoral Research Fellow for AI in Education: Multimodal Learning Analytics in Collaborative Learning (100%, E 13 TVL, for 2 years)

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in Computer Science, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Psychology, Empirical Educational Research, Learning Sciences, Cognitive Science, or related disciplines who is eager to contribute to cutting-edge research on collaborative learning, multimodal learning analytics, and artificial intelligence. The position offers substantial opportunities to develop an independent research agenda within the broader areas of multimodal learning analytics, AI in education, and (computer-supported) collaborative learning.

The successful candidate will join the interdisciplinary DFG-funded project AEyeCoL - Advanced Understanding of Eye Gaze in Co-Located Collaborative Learning, which investigates co-located collaborative learning processes using mobile eye-tracking, video recordings, discourse data, physiological measures, and machine-learning approaches. The project aims to better understand how gaze behavior, communication, and other multimodal indicators reflect and predict group dynamics during collaborative learning and how these processes can be automatically assessed and supported using multimodal data and AI-based methods. The postdoctoral researcher will play a leading scientific role in the project, driving multimodal data analyses, developing novel computational methods, publishing findings in leading international journals and conferences, contributing to grant development, and preparing follow-up studies in higher education and school contexts.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Babette Bühler, future Tenure-Track Professor of AI in Education, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trautwein, Dr. Tim Fütterer, project collaborators at the Technical University of Munich, and other researchers at the Hector Research Institute. The Hector Research Institute is a nationally and internationally leading research center in education science and psychology. Our interdisciplinary team works in a well-equipped building located close to the historic old town of Tübingen, Germany (www.hib.uni-tuebingen.de). The institute aims to establish a research hub focused on data science and machine learning in education, and we are seeking candidates who have the potential to take a leading role in this initiative.

The position is offered as a fixed-term contract for 2 years, with the possibility of extension contingent on funding availability. The expected start date is Fall 2026. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the institute’s postdoctoral academy, PACE (Tübingen Postdoctoral Academy for Research on Education), which offers training, coaching, and mentoring at the postdoctoral level. In addition, the candidate may join the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network (www.lead.uni-tuebingen.de) to develop cross-faculty collaborations with researchers in the field of education.

PhD Position (m/f/d) in AI in Education: Multimodal Learning Analytics and Adaptive Learning Environments (75% TV-L E13, limited to three years) (HIB)

Deadline: 15 July 2026

At the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, an interdisciplinary research institute at the University of Tübingen, the following position is available from October 2026:

PhD Position (m/f/d) in AI in Education: Multimodal Learning Analytics and Adaptive Learning Environments

(75% TV-L E13, limited to three years)

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate with a background in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Psychology, Learning Sciences, Educational Research, Data Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field to join our interdisciplinary research team at the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology, University of Tübingen. The successful candidate will contribute to a research program that develops AI systems capable of modeling, assessing, and supporting learners’ attentional, cognitive, and metacognitive processes in real time using multimodal behavioral data. The position is embedded in a growing research initiative at the intersection of artificial intelligence, learning analytics, psychology, and educational research.

A central focus of the project is understanding how learners regulate their attention and learning processes, including phenomena such as mind wandering, metacognitive monitoring, and self-regulated learning. Using multimodal behavioral data, including eye tracking, video recordings, digital trace data, and other behavioral indicators, we aim to develop AI models capable of detecting and modeling these processes in real time.

The project further investigates how such multimodal AI systems can be integrated into adaptive learning environments that provide personalized support based on learners’ attentional and self-regulatory needs. The PhD candidate will design and conduct empirical studies, develop multimodal machine-learning models, investigate the mechanisms underlying attention and learning, and contribute to the development of AI-supported educational technologies.

The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Babette Bühler, future Tenure-Track Professor for AI in Education, Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trautwein, Prof. Dr. Peter Gerjets (IWM), and collaborate with researchers at the Hector Research Institute and the LEAD Graduate School & Research Network.

What We Expect from You

We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic background, enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research, and a genuine interest in using AI to better understand and support learning. Specifically, we expect:

  • An excellent academic degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, Statistics, Psychology, Empirical Educational Research, or a related field.

  • Strong interest in human-centered artificial intelligence, adaptive learning systems, and educational technologies.

  • Programming skills, preferably in Python, or a demonstrated willingness and ability to rapidly develop advanced programming skills.
