Which degree courses can I take at the Department of Biology at the University of Tübingen?
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Biology, standard study period: 3 years
- Master of Science (MSc), standard study period: 2 years
- State examination in Biology for secondary teachers (Staatsexamen), standard study period: 5 years
- BSc in Geoecology (in cooperation with the Department of Geosciences), standard study period: 3 years
- BSc in Bioinformatics (in cooperation with the Department of Computer Science), standard study period: 3 years
- BSc in Nanoscience (in cooperation with other departments in the Faculty of Science), standard study period: 3 years
Career Prospects
Depending on the type of degree and area of specialization, the career prospects are, as is the case for all university graduates, quite good. The prospects for teacher training students are poor.
How and when should I apply?
Admission to all the degree courses in biology is restricted (numerus clausus). Application for all courses will be possible via the registrar’s office from the beginning of May. Application is only possible for the winter semester (start 1st October). Please send your application directly to the registrar’s office by 15th July at the latest.

Which average Abitur (school leaving examination) grade do I need?
The exact grade required for admission to degree courses can, unfortunately, not be fixed before the closing date for application. The usual grade limit is 1,7 for teacher training in biology und 2,4 for the bachelor’s degree course in biology. You can however “improve” your grade by up to 0,5 points by internships, vocational training or other qualifications in a biology-related area.
90% of the places are directly allocated by the University and 10% according to the waiting period.
Is there a taster course?
Yes, you are free to attend lectures at any time in order to get an impression of what it is like to study biology. A list of lectures is to be found in the online course catalogue of the University of Tübingen under "Biologie: Bachelor: 1.Studienjahr".
