The Department of in Biology in Tübingen is among the biology departments with the highest research performance in the German-speaking countries. Our research is focused on six major topics.
Two major research topics "Molecular Biology of Plants" and “Microbiological Principles of Biotechnology and Infection Biology”, both from the particularly future-oriented biotechnology/gene technology (genetic engineering) area, are already firmly anchored in the faculty. Groups from Biochemistry and Chemistry are involved in research at the interfaculty Center for Plant Molecular Biology. The Interfaculty Institute of Microbiology and Infection Medicine was established in 2010 in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine.
The Interfaculty Institute for Cell Biology has further institutionalized the interface between biological and medical research with the major research topic "Cell Biology of Humans and Animals".
The major research area “Neurobiology” strengthens our cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine through contemporary, application-oriented projects and participates in the interfaculty cluster of excellence, CIN.
Together with the Department of Computer Sciences, the department is actively involved in the development of the Tübingen Center for Bioinformatics (ZBIT).
The major research area “Evolution and Ecology of Organisms (EvE)” integrates the geosciences with biology and has overall responsibility for students taking the "Geoecology" degree course.
With the Chair of Ethics in the Life Sciences, the Faculties of Science and Philosophy have created a permanent forum for ethical reflection and discussion.
