Founded in 1952, we are the oldest political science department in Germany, and a renowned centre of excellence in both teaching and research. We offer a wide range of courses and programmes in political science for both BA and MA students. Cutting edge research is undertaken in our research units led by our professors, all international specialists in their respective fields.

Institutskolloquium: Governance und begrenzte Staatlichkeit

Thomas Risse ist Professor für internationale Politik und Direktor der Arbeitsstelle Transnationale Beziehungen, Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik am Otto-Suhr-Institut für Politikwissenschaft der Freien Universität Berlin.
Risse promovierte 1987 an der Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main. Von 1997 bis 2001 war er Professor für Internationale Beziehungen am Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies und am Department of Social and Political Sciences des European University Institute in Florenz (Italien). Frühere Lehr- und Forschungstätigkeiten umfassten die Universität Konstanz (Deutschland) und die Universitäten Cornell, Yale und Stanford sowie die University of Wyoming (USA).

Thomas Risse ist Sprecher des DFG-Sonderforschungsbereichs 700 “Governance in Räumen begrenzter Staatlichkeit” und Direktor der Berlin Graduate School for Transnational Studies. 2003 erhielt er den Max-Planck-Forschungspreis für internationale Kooperation. Er ist Autor von “Cooperation among Democracies. The European Influence on U.S. Foreign Policy” (1995) und Mitherausgeber von “The End of the West? Crisis and Change in the Atlantic Order” (2008, gemeinsam mit Jeffrey Anderson und G. John Ikenberry), “The Power of Human Rights: International Norms and Domestic Change” (1999, gemeinsam mit Stephen C. Ropp und Kathryn Sikkink) sowie von “Transforming
Europe. Europeanization and Domestic Change” (2001, gemeinsam mit Maria Green Cowles and James Caporaso). Außerdem ist er Mitherausgeber des “Handbook of International Relations” (2002, gemeinsam mit Walter Carlsnaes and Beth Simmons).

Gerade erst erschienen ist sein neuestes Werk, “A Community of Europeans? Transnational Identities and Public Spheres” (Cornell University Press).
