Japanese Studies in Tübingen

Majoring in Japanese Studies means taking an in-depth look at Japan, at the language and culture of contemporary and pre-modern Japan. Our work is based on the spoken and written Japanese language. Due to the high proportion of Anglo-American literature in academia, a very good command of English is essential. A love of learning languages and a willingness to show extraordinary  commitment to your studies are also required.

The Japanese Studies Department of Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, offers Bachelor and Master degree programmes. In both programmes, all courses are combined into modules which are examined over the course of your studies. The standard period of study for the Bachelor's degree in Japanese Studies as a major subject is eight semesters; classes in the 4th and 5th semesters take place in Japan, at the Tübingen Centre for Japanese Studies at Dōshisha University (TCJS) in Kyōto, housed on the campus of our long-standing cooperation partner, the reknowned Dōshisha University.
