Project's Title: Civil War and Regime Change in Roman Historiography (1st-3rd c. AD)
Short Summary: This PhD project proposes a comprehensive analysis of the representation of civil strife and regime change within the historiography of the Roman Empire between 69 and 193 AD -from the rise of Vespasian to that of Septimius Severus-. It examines how Roman imperial historiography portrays and interprets violent regime change and bellum civile (civil war) that took place during this period, investigating how these portrayals reflect the ways in which imperial propaganda presents these events or critically engages with such representations. In doing so, it explores how contemporary notions and perceptions of the political order of the Principate were reflected on historical writing of the time. By exploring these intersections between political thought, imperial propaganda and historiographical narrative, this project offers a fresh perspective on the role of historical memory in shaping perceptions of imperial power and political legitimacy, during what is commonly considered one of the most stable periods in the history of the Roman monarchy.
