Senior Prof. Dr. Klaus Georg Nickel

My main research focus is materials science in the field of advanced ceramics, composites and more recently, traditional ceramics of archaeological interest. The research covers processing, characterisation and evaluation of ceramics (from silicates and oxides like alumina and zirconia to carbon, carbides, nitrides or borides). Particular expertise exists in the chemical property evaluation (oxidation and corrosion). Other research goals are phase relations, mechanical properties, biomimetics of biomaterials.

Dr. Marta Díaz Zorita-Bonilla

My research focusses on the bioarchaeological analysis of commingled remains and the investigation of funerary patterns during the Late Neolithic and the Bronze Age in Europe. In addition, I use biochemical analysis such as isotope analysis applied to bone & teeth material to investigate subsistence patterns (δ13C and δ15N) and mobility patterns of prehistoric communities (87Sr/86Sr and δ18O).

Dr. Silvia Rita Amicone

I am a research scientist within the Archaeometry Research Group of the University of Tübingen and an active member of the Archaeomaterials Research Network (AMRN, University College London). Archaeomaterials are my primary fields of research, with an emphasis on ceramic and the multifaceted interactions between resources, technology, and society. My teaching covers different aspects of archaeological science and theory and I am leading a series of courses on material science and archaeological ceramics

Dr. Dobereiner Chala-Aldana

I specialize in GIS applied to the analysis of past mobilities, geoarchaeology, and archaeometrical research. My main focus is on elaborating mobility models based on isotopic analyses of  87Sr/86Sr and δ18O in ancient human groups. I have contributed in areas such as Early Holocene mobility of hunter-gatherer groups in South America, as well as the interactions between Full Bronze Age settlements in southern Spain.

I am interested in the global dimensions of ancient aromatics and spices throughout Asia and East Africa using biochemical and biomolecular analyses to characterize organic residues. My current projects aim at reconstructing the use of smells and scented plants in the past using biomolecular profiling of plant secondary metabolites, lipids and proteins.

My main research topics are Organic Residue Analysis, Biomolecular archaeology, GC-MS, LC-MS/MS, Archaeology of Smell and the Senses, Trade and Globalization.

Current leading projects:

  • Globalizing Scents and Spices: Tracking the trade of aromatics through biomolecular archaeology
  • Exploring funerary and embalming rituals in ancient Egypt through metabolic profiling
