Please note that a language certificate is required at two stages of the Erasmus application process:
- For the application to the School of Business & Economics, the language certificates listed below are generally accepted, provided they meet the language requirements of the respective partner university. The School of Business & Economics does not consider an expiration date. This means, for example, that an older “Abiturzeugnis” is also accepted as proof of language proficiency.
- After successful nomination, the application to the partner university follows. For this step, the language certificate usually has to be submitted again. The specific requirements of the respective partner university apply. These may include, for example:
- a maximum validity period of the certificate (e.g. not older than two years),
- acceptance of only certain language tests (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS),
- minimum scores or specific language levels.
You can find out whether and which specific requirements the partner university has regarding the language certificate in the respective fact sheet in the application and information portal in ILIAS, as well as on the partner university’s website for incoming students.
The following language certificates are accepted for applying for an Erasmus study place at the School of Business & Economics:
- A-level certificate: if the language skills are stated according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
- Passed language course at the Foreign Language Center or the Department of Modern Languages: If the language level of the passed course is explicitly stated on the transcript of records or a certificate of achievement according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, this can be recognized as proof of language proficiency. Alternatively, after passing a language course, a simple certificate of language proficiency according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages can be issued by the teacher or lecturer. Ideally, the certificate should be written in English.
- DAAD language certificate: can be issued by a teacher at the Foreign Language Center after passing a course according to the language level of the course or by the Lektor:innen at the Department of Modern Languages. External students who have not completed language courses at the Foreign Language Center or the Department of Modern Languages must arrange a test appointment in good time.
- UNICert certificate: after several consecutive language courses at the Foreign Language Center
- Official language tests: see DAAD overview page on languages and language tests
- Enrolment in an English-taught degree program: A certificate of English language proficiency can be issued if English is the only language of instruction and examination (currently for the Master's degree programs in Economics, Economics and Finance, Management and Economics and European Economics) or if only English-taught courses have been taken to date according to the transcript of records. Please contact masterspam prevention@wiwi.uni-tuebingen.de for further information.
- Degree (equivalent to at least a Bachelor's degree in Germany) in the relevant foreign language from a recognized university in Germany
Further information can be found on the pages of the Foreign Language Center, the Romanisches Seminar and the Institute of English Languages and Literature.
In addition to the Department of Modern Languages, the d.a.i. also issues DAAD language certificates for English and Spanish (for a fee).
