Stuart Lau (South China Morning Post) and Stephan Ortmann (City University Hong Kong) join Gunter Schubert (Universität Tübingen) for a panel discussion on the causes of the ongoing protests in Hong Kong and the ramifications of recent political, economic and social developments for the city’s future.

The event is part of the Brennpunkt Asien series on current affairs organised by China Centrum Tübingen and will be co-hosted by the Chair of Greater Studies, Department of Sinology.

Prof. Cheng Chung-Ying (University of Hawai'i, Editor of Journal of Chinese Philosophy) will give the third lecture in our China Business Culture series, presenting his insights into Yijing-Philosophy of Management and Leadership and the C Management Theory.

Chaired by journalist Frank Sieren, experts on Sino-African relations - Stacey Links (Utrecht University), Georg Lammich (Universität Duisburg-Essen) and Solange Guo Chatelard (Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris) - will analyse and debate current issues related to China's broad economic, infrastructural and military engagement in Africa.

Dr. Alicia Henning (Southeast University, Nanjing) will give the second lecture in our China Business Culture series, examining new developments in corporate structures and work organisation in light of Daoist values.

Director and Head of Institute for Global History at Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor Li Xuetao will give the ninth lecture in the Ringvorlesung series, China: Gestern-Heute-Morgen. He will discuss the influences of exchange with foreign countries and foreign policy on the cultural relations with foreigners and the historical way of thinking of today's Chinese.

At the 2018 World Congress of Philosophy in Beijing, eminent philosopher and director of our partner institution World Ethics Institute Beijing (WEIB), Tu Wei-ming, delivered the keynote speech. Speaking on the theme of 'Spiritual Humanism' Prof. Tu discussed what it means to  'Learn to be Human'. On Wed. June 18, we will show a short film of Tu Wei-ming outlining these ideas. Dr. Jonathan Keir - formerly a scholar at Welthethos Institut Tübingen (WEIT) and now at WEIB - will then examine Tu's vision and compare it to Hans Küng's idea of a 'Welthethos'. We look forward to an open and exciting discussion.

John P. Neelsen will give the eighth lecture in the Ringvorlesung series, China: Gestern-Heute-Morgen. He will discuss the effects of the relocation of the world economic centre of gravity towards Asia on the relations of the People's Republic with Russia, India, Japan and also with the USA as a central but extra-regional power.

On June 6 CCT kicks off a series of three events on Chinese business culture with a talk by Y.K. Chan, a Hong Kong entrepreneur and think-tank member, who has been working on the ground in China, directly consulting on economic and infrastructural development since 1979. Drawing on his first-hand experience advising Chinese authorities on issues such as the development of Shenzhen's and other cities' container ports, Mr. Chan shares both insider and outsider perspectives on China's economic system, its modernisation trajectory over the past four decades and prospects for the New Silk Road.

Markus Pudelko will give the seventh lecture in the Ringvorlesung series, China: Gestern-Heute-Morgen. He will discuss the differences in the understanding of fairness and justice between Chinese and German employees in companies and how to promote trust in this aspect.

Prof. Tu Wei-ming, globally renowned expert on Confucianism and director of our partner institution World Ethos Institute Beijing (WEIB), was interviewed at last year's World Congress of Philosophy by senior CCTV moderator Tian Wei on the topic of "Civilizational Dialogue and the Future of Humanity" ( 文明对话与人类未来). This week, the interview was broadcast domestically and internationally by CCTV's global English language channel, CGTN, in the programme "World Insight."

In the interview, Prof. Tu discusses his views on the relevance and global significance of Confucian concepts, particularly the "Five Core Virtues," in the context of today's world.

From May 2 - 4, a workshop commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the May 4th Movement will be held at CCT.

An exhibition on the topic will run at Weltethos Institut (Hintere Grabenstraße 26) from May 5-31 and can be visited during regular centre opening hours, weekdays 9:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00. The exhibition opening will be held on May 4, 19:00.

Featuring both renowned China scholars and speakers from the world of business and the media, the series opens on April 23 with a lecture from CCT director, Prof. Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer.

In this lecture, she demonstrates how scandals arising from unscrupulous business practices have brought ethicists into the limelight and explores the context and content of their prescriptions for doing business ethically.
