Please, don’t let them be misunderstood: Generative Language Models

It is important that people understand what it means for large language models (LLMs) to proceed statistically. The article gives examples of misunderstandings with consequences for everyday social processes in education and law and pleads for comprehensive offers to acquire understanding about the technical functioning of large language models and general reflective competence about one's own perceptions and insinuations (epistemic competence).
