"AI and Sustainability": Invitation to public debate on te.ma
Our Cluster "Machine Learning" is exploring new paths in science communication around the topics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Sustainability in a cooperation with te.ma.
te.ma is a new public space for science and debate on the Internet. For six months, topic-focused channels present the most important contributions to the respective expert discourses and discuss socially important issues in forums.
The themed channels are curated by scientists, who make specialist articles accessible through intros, allow experts from various disciplines to speak in special inputs, and take a stand themselves in the curator's cut. The curator team for the channel "AI and Sustainability" consists of three junior researchers from our Cluster: Jan Lause, Solveig Klepper and Matthias Karlbauer. Starting on April 3, the three will be introducing the world of algorithms and intelligent systems, reflecting on the concept of AI as well as that of sustainability, and scrutinizing a wide variety of AI applications in terms of their resource and energy consumption. They will also ask about the benefits of AI-based technologies for a more sustainable life, about their societal impact - and they will draw attention to where the biggest pitfalls and challenges lie from a research perspective. The three curators will also be out and about in the forums, responding to questions and suggestions and following up on topic threads.
The first contributions are already online and make evident that many ideas for the use of AI already existed in the last century, but that only in the last decades the technical prerequisites for its use have been established. They also show how, in addition to the ecological and economic aspects, the social dimensions of the sustainability concept are also taken into account.
