Bei der Bewerbung sind viele Aspekte zu beachten. Das Bewerbungsverfahren umfasst vier Hauptschritte:
Studierende müssen ein bestimmtes Sprachniveau in Englisch nachweisen. Dieser Nachweis erfolgt in der Regel über den TOEFL iBT-Test. Hierbei muss die erzielte Punktzahl je nach Austauschuniversität innerhalb eines festgelegten Bereiches liegen, beispielsweise zwischen 61 und 83 Punkten.
In Oregon ist das Jahr - anders als in Deutschland - in drei Terms eingeteilt: Fall, Winter und Spring Terms. Ein Term dauert ca. 3 Monate. Beginn des akademischen Jahres ist im September; Ende Mitte Juni. Studierende können sich für ein, zwei oder drei Terms in Oregon bewerben.
Die Studiengebühren (tuition) an den Universitäten in Oregon - und damit der kostenintensivste Teil des Austausches - werden durch das Austauschprogramm gedeckt. Die Gebühren der Heimatuniversität müssen weiterhin (zugunsten der Austauschpartner in Deutschland) gezahlt werden. Ansonsten fallen Gebühren seitens der Partnerhochschule an, etwa für die Nutzung der Gebäude auf dem Campus, und es fallen natürlich Kosten für die Versicherung und den Flug, sowie generelle Lebenshaltungskosten (Kleidung, Reisen, Lebensmittel) an.
In Oregon sind Universitätskurse normalerweise in einem "Schedule of Classes" oder einem "Course Catalog" aufgeführt. Studierende müssen in jedem Semester, in dem sie sich in Oregon aufhalten, eine Kombination von Kursen belegen, die insgesamt 12 akademische Credits für Undergraduates und 9 für Graduates ausmacht, um als Vollzeitstudenten zu gelten, mit ca. 3-4 Credits pro Kurs.
Ein paar Monate vor der Abreise bietet das Oregon Study Center ein Orientierungsseminar an, bei dem jegliche Fragen rund um den Austausch geklärt werden und sich die Studierenden auf ihren Auslandsaufenthalt vorbereiten können. Auch in Oregon vor Ort werden Orientierungsseminare an den jeweiligen Universitäten angeboten.
