Department of History

The monograph ‘A cultural history of late antique historiography’ aims at developing a complex account of history writing in the period from the 3rd to the 8th century. It will locate the development of the genre within the cultural, political and religious changes of Late Antiquity and seeks to move beyond the dichotomy between classical and Christian, which has tended to dominate older accounts.
During the stay in Tübingen I plan to work on the chapter on time. It covers, first, the use of dating systems by historians, their technical aspects as well as the meaning that such forms of time reckoning project. Second, it studies the role played by time in historical narrative, on a macro-level (what counts as historical time and how can one narrate it?) as well as on a micro-level (different times scales in particular episodes).
