Splinter Meeting "C": Supernova Remnants
Annual Meeting of the Astronomische Gesellschaft 2013, Tübingen, Germany
Dates:
Tuesday, Sept. 24, and Thursday, 26, 14:00 - 18:00
Convenors:
Manami Sasaki (Institut für Astronomie und Astrophysik, Tübingen)
Frank Haberl (Max-Planck-Institut für Extraterrestrische Physik, Garching)
Abstract:
Supernova remnants (SNRs) are remains of stellar explosions, which release a large amount of energy and matter into the interstellar space. Stellar matter is thrown out with an initial velocity of ~10000 km/s, and the spherically expanding blast-wave shock produces a cavity with a very low density, high-temperature interior. Particles are accelerated in the shock fronts of SNRs and can gain energy up to 10^15 eV or higher. Therefore, SNRs are engines for the matter cycle in a galaxy and sources of cosmic rays.
In the last decade, new telescopes from radio to TeV have provided us with new data and thus new insights into the many physical processes in these objects. This splinter meeting should bring scientists working on many different aspects of SNR physics together. We will discuss new observational and theoretical results in different energy bands and put these findings in context with the overall nature of SNRs in order to develop future plans for coordinated research between different energy regimes.
Program:
The splinter meeting C will consist of three sessions, two on Tuesday and one on Thursday. Each talk has been assigned 15 min total including discussion.
