Teacher Education in Dialogue

Teacher Education in Dialogue is an international forum for student teachers to explore education from international and intercultural perspectives.

Each session features a short thematic input by international guest lecturers from around the world, offering insights and perspectives from a different educational or cultural context. The input serves as a starting point for open and interactive exchange between local and international student teachers.

Together, we discuss current issues in education, compare different perspectives and approaches, and reflect on what they may mean for schools, teaching, and teacher education in different contexts.

Topics may include, for example, teacher education, school systems, classroom culture, inclusion and diversity, digitalisation, or teaching quality – depending on the background of the respective guest lecturer.

Teacher Education in Dialogue is part of TüMORROW – Global Perspectives for Future Teachers, an additional qualification offered by the Tübingen School of Education (TüSE). The series provides opportunities to broaden international and intercultural perspectives on education and to engage in dialogue with students and lecturers from different educational and cultural backgrounds.

Culture in Schools and Research

The American School System and a Classroom-Based Study

by Elizabeth Bear

How does culture impact a country’s school system, and how can culture be taught in the classroom? In the first half of this talk, I will introduce major cultural differences between the schooling systems of Germany and the United States. In the second half, I will present results from an intercultural competence intervention that took place in seventh grade (ages 11-13) English classes in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Using the study as an example of how intercultural competence can be fostered, the talk aims for discussion about the role and importance of culture and intercultural competence in the school context.
