Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology evaluates the national education program
Is the tax money that the federal and state governments are using to reduce the link between educational success and social background being spent effectively? The Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology is part of the consortium evaluating the Startchancen Program.
What is the Startchancen Program?
In Germany, educational success is still closely tied to social background. The Startchancen Program aims to decouple educational success from social background and promote more equal opportunities. The program specifically supports schools with a high proportion of socially disadvantaged students. For this purpose, the federal and state governments have been jointly investing around 20 billion euros since the 2024/25 school year, spread over the next ten years. www.bmbf.de/startchancen-programm
How is the Hector Research Institute involved?
For the Startchancen Program to be successful, it is being scientifically evaluated and continuously improved based on the results. Success is defined specifically as the program achieving its goal of reducing the influence of social background on educational success in Germany while being effective and efficient.
The evaluation is led by the Institute for Applied Social Sciences (infas), supported by experts from various institutions that together form the evaluation consortium. One of the consortium members is Prof. Dr. Benjamin Nagengast, professor of educational psychology and deputy director of the Hector Research Institute of Education Sciences and Psychology at the University of Tübingen.
