Caio Levy

Caio Levy is a PhD candidate at the Institute of Political Science at the University of Tübingen since October 2025, working under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Diez. He holds an MA in International Studies from the Lisbon University Institute (ISCTE-IUL, 2024) and a BA in European Studies from the University of Coimbra (2021).

Before joining the Institute, Caio worked as a research assistant at the Institute of Population and Social Research at Marmara University in Istanbul, contributing to projects on the Black Sea security complex and EU–Türkiye relations. During his master’s studies, he also collaborated with the UNHCR representative in Portugal, the Portuguese Refugee Council, and the Islamic World Observatory (OMI) in Lisbon.

His doctoral research lies at the intersection of critical European studies, constructivist international relations theory, and the sociology of emotions. Drawing on the theoretical foundations of the “emotional turn” in international relations, his project revisits aspects of EU–Türkiye relations traditionally examined through constructivist lenses such as identity and power, approaching them from the angle of emotions. It explores how emotions shape the (re)production of identities and power dynamics between Brussels and Ankara, contributing to and reflecting a relationship marked by alternating patterns of cooperation and contestation.
