Institute of Political Science

Centre for International Relations/Peace and Conflict Research (CIRP)

History

CIRP was founded in 1991 by Volker Rittberger to provide a focal point and administrative frame for research on international politics and peace and conflict in Tübingen. It built on the earlier Tübingen Peace Research Group (TPRG) - Arbeitsgruppe Friedensforschung Tübingen (AGFF), which had been set up in 1968. From 1987 to 2008, CIRP published the Tübingen Working Papers for International Politics and Peace Research (TAPIR). Since 2008, Thomas Diez and Andreas Hasenclever are co-directors of CIRP.

Mission

CIRP’s main contribution is the combination of peace and conflict studies with the broader field of International Relations, and the interdisciplinary exchange with International Law, Sociology and other relevant fields. CIRP is interested in the application of International Relations Theory to the analysis of conflict, conceptual questions of peace and conflict, and the impact of conflicts and a changing global environment on international order. CIRP’s research fields are reflected in Tübingen’s MA Programme in Peace Research and International Relations.
