Research

Jochen von Bernstorff, LL.M. (EUI)

holds the Chair for Constitutional law, International Law and Human Rights (since 2011), and teaches/has taught international law as a visiting professor at the German Federal Foreign Office Academy Berlin (since 2020), Université Panthéon-Assas Paris II (IHEI), Université Aix-Marseille and at National Taiwan University Taipei.

He was with the German Federal Foreign Office (diplomatic service 2002-2007) in the Multilateral Human Rights Policy Task Force of the UN-Department and a senior research fellow and spokesperson at the Max-Planck-Institute for Comparative Public Law and Public International Law in Heidelberg, a Visiting Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre in Cambridge and a Fernand Braudel Fellow at the EUI in Florence. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the European Journal of International Law and has acted as consultant for the United Nations (FAO/UNEP/World Bank), the German Federal Foreign Office and the German Parliament.

Main fields of research are general international law, theory and history of international law and its institutions, with a current focus on the evolution of the prohibition of the use of force and international humanitarian law. Book publications include the monograph The Public International Law Theory of Hans Kelsen (CUP 2010), and the recent monograph L'essor et la Chute du Droit International Humanitaire: Une brève Histoire de la Codification de la Protection des Civils en Temps de Guerre (Pédone Paris 2023). Recent edited volumes include The Battle for International Law in the Decolonization Era (OUP 2019, together with P. Dann) and Affectedness and Participation in International Institutions (Routledge 2019, together with J. Sändig und A. Hasenclever).
