PhD position in High Energy Astrophysics

The High Energy Astrophysics group of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAAT) at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen invites applications for a

 

PhD position (duration: 3 years; starting date: Sep. 1st, 2019)

 

in the context of observational studies of Galactic TeV-selected supernova remnants detected with H.E.S.S.

The successful candidate will work on multiwavelength data obtained on specific TeV-selected supernova remnants and their interpretation, with a focus on X-ray data obtained with XMM-Newton. The work will be conducted in the framework of the high energy astrophysics group at IAAT.

Applicants are required to have a diploma, master or equivalent university degree in physics or astronomy at the beginning of the contract.

The position is available starting September 1st, 2019, a later starting date can be negotiated. The salary is based upon the German federal public service scale (50% of E13 TV-L). The University seeks to raise the number of women in research and teaching and therefore urges qualified women to apply. Stellar winds in massive stars and accretion processes onto compact objects

The High Energy Astrophysics group of the Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IAAT) at the Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen invites applications for a

 

PhD position (duration: 3 years; starting date: Oct. 1st, 2019)

focused on

observational studies of stellar winds in massive stars and accretion processes onto compact objects (neutron stars and black holes) in high mass X-ray binaries.

The successful candidate will work with data from X-ray satellites, such as XMM-Newton and NuSTAR, in order to understand the structured stellar wind of O/B stars and to decipher the largescale geometry of wind accretion in high mass X-ray binaries. The work will be conducted in the framework of the high-energy astrophysics group at IAAT. A master degree or an equivalent degree in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics is required by the beginning of the contract.

The position is available starting October 1st, 2019; a later starting date can be negotiated. The position is that of a scientific employee with a salary based upon the German federal public service scale (66% of E13 TV-L) and includes full employee benefits. PhD position (3 years)

of a DFG (German Research Foundation) funded project in the fields of stellar atmospheres and
atomic data, entitled

Transition Probabilities of Trans-iron Elements

The PhD project focuses on the calculation of transitions probabilities of trans-iron elements from copper to barium with a pseudo-relativistic Hartree-Fock approach. The newly calculated data will be used to search for and to identify spectral lines of trans-iron elements and to determine their abundances in hot white dwarf stars.

Applicants are required to have a master or equivalent university degree in astrophysics or physics.

The salary is based upon the German federal public service scale (2/3 of E13 TV-L). The process of hiring the selected candidate is handled by the central administration of the university.
