With one of the richest traditions among philosophy departments in Germany and a history deeply interwoven with German Idealism, the University of Tübingen’s Philosophy Department is well known for its expertise in the history of philosophy – an expertise, which covers classical German philosophy as well as ancient, medieval and modern philosophy. The Department combines this strength in the history of philosophy with broad expertise in systematic philosophy, so that there is a lively exchange between the two in both research and teaching. The Department’s strengths in systematic philosophy lie in metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, action theory, ethics, metaethics, the theory of emotions, and philosophy of logic.
