Academics in Activism?

There is broad consensus among climate scientists around the world that the climate crisis is human-made and that urgent action is needed on all levels of society for climate mitigation and adaptation. But is it justified for academics as academics to take part in public protests against the climate crisis or in support of climate justice? Or should they—if they wish to do so—participate only in their capacity as private citizens, without displaying visible symbols of their scientific profession, such as lab coats or academic robes?

Never have to say Goodbye?

In the wake of recent advances in the field of artificial intelligence, a new growth market has emerged in the form of the digital afterlife industry (DAI). Its providers hold out the prospect of being able to interact with digital simulations of deceased people. Such promises not only fuel the old human dream of overcoming finiteness, but also raise various ethical questions that are still largely unresolved.

‘Your Body My Choice’

Far from constituting a coincidence or macabre joke, the slogan “Your Body My Choice” is a co-optation of feminist standpoints and might be integral to current fascist and right-wing populist narratives, as was also witnessed at anti-vaccination demonstrations during the Covid-19 pandemic.
