Alumni Spotlights: Catching Up with Our Alumni

Every researcher who passes through the Machine Learning Cluster eventually embarks on a new chapter in their career. In our new Alumni Spotlight series, we speak with former group leaders, postdocs, and PhD researchers to learn where their paths have taken them since their time at the Cluster and what they are working on today

Whether someone joined us as a PhD student, came through as an independent group leader, or spent a few formative years here as a junior professor, the Cluster has always been a waypoint rather than a final destination. We know these researchers during their time at the Cluster, but once they leave, their careers continue to unfold elsewhere, whether in academia, industry or nonprofit organizations. With this series, we want to reconnect with our alumni, learn where their paths have taken them, and share the next chapters of their stories.

One of the things that makes this community so fascinating is the sheer variety of paths a machine learning background can open up. Some of our alumni have remained in academia, building their own research groups and advancing the frontiers of the field. Others have continued their research careers in industry labs, research institutes, and other environments beyond the university setting. Some have brought their expertise to public institutions, helping shape policy and governance, while others have joined NGOs and mission-driven organizations to tackle societal challenges far beyond the scope of a traditional research agenda.

There is no single trajectory that defines what comes after the Cluster. The careers of our alumni are as diverse as the people themselves — and that is exactly what this series aims to showcase.

What to Expect from the Series

In the coming weeks and months, we'll be featuring former members of the Machine Learning Cluster to learn about:

  • The work they're doing now, and how it connects back to their time in the Cluster

  • The biggest surprises or turning points in their career since leaving

  • Where they see the greatest potential for Machine Learning in their field

  • Advice for current Cluster members considering their next steps

We are launching the series with our former PhD student Jakob Schlör who now works at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, one of the world’s leading centres for weather prediction, he develops machine learning models that make forecasts more actionable, helping farmers or electricity providers make better-informed decisions.
