Master's Thesis Application
The School of Business and Economics asks all students who plan to start their Master's thesis in the following semester to complete a short survey indicating the modules they have completed, their grades, and the work unit (Lehrstuhl) where they would like to be supervised. Students who already have a supervisor should also complete the survey and indicate in the comments that they have already been accepted by a member of staff. The survey link is sent by email and the survey is conducted via ILIAS.
At the end of the survey, you must list five work groups in order of preference. Your application is only valid if you provide five different priorities.
This information is also available on the department’s website.
Regardless of the School’s survey, please feel free to contact our chair at any time if you are interested in writing your Master's thesis in the area of taxation.
Writing Your Master's Thesis at the Chair
- You have been assigned to our chair for the Master's thesis (see above).
- Please register with the Examination Office using this form. The Examination Office verifies your admission requirements (regular enrolment and the required minimum number of credits). Once your admission requirements have been verified, you will receive an approval document signed by the head of the examination board. This process usually takes one to two weeks. After receiving the approval document, you have one month to start writing your thesis (please check the dates on the approval document).
- Please contact the chair again once you have received the approval document and send the document to the chair. Students may suggest two or three topics; the exact topic will then be determined by the chair. Topic suggestions are optional. The chair will complete and sign the approval document with the final Master's thesis topic. From that date, your topic is fixed, and the time allowed for completing your Master's thesis is determined by the relevant Prüfungsordnung.
- The chair will send the completed and signed approval document back to the Examination Office within one month after you received it from the Examination Office. The Examination Office will record the information and monitor the deadline.
- After completing your Master's thesis, please make an appointment with the Examination Office to hand it in. It is not possible to submit the Master's thesis without prior consultation.
- The requirements of the Examination Office always take precedence. Please check the chair’s guidelines for writing a Bachelor thesis, seminar paper, or Master's thesis.
